Most luxury announces itself. A luxury dog collar cannot afford to. It goes out on every walk, through wet grass, city pavements and hotel lobbies, and whatever it promises has to hold up in all three. So the honest measure of a luxury dog collar is not a logo and not a price. It is time. A Perro Collection collar takes one and a half to two and a half hours of handwork in our atelier in Tuscany, and this is an account of where those hours go.
Perro Collection luxury dog collars are handcrafted in the brand's own atelier in Tuscany, Italy, from Italian leather supplied by LWG-certified tanneries with a Gold Rating. Their hardware is multi-layer gold-coloured.
Why a Collar Is Measured in Hours
A handbag spends much of its life on a shelf. A collar does not. It leaves the house in the morning and again at night, it sits against a neck that moves, turns and shakes off the rain, and very little about that life is decorative.
The question to ask of any luxury dog collar, then, is not how it looks on the day it arrives. It is how it looks after a year of walks. That answer is settled long before the box is opened: in the choice of hide, in the hands that assemble and stitch it, in how many gold baths the hardware has been through. Perro Collection, founded in Amsterdam in 2017, makes its luxury dog collars on that principle.
This is different. You are not buying a name. You are buying the hours.
Three Leathers, One Origin
Every collar begins with a hide, and every hide we use is Italian. It is real, natural bovine leather from cattle raised in the EU, never synthetic, and it comes exclusively from tanneries certified by the Leather Working Group and assessed against its most demanding requirements, the Gold Rating. The LWG standard audits leather manufacturers on environmental management, chemical management, water, energy and traceability. For a collar, it means the luxury starts before the leather ever reaches Tuscany.
Within the Walk collection the leather comes in three qualities. Each behaves differently in the hand and on the dog, and none of them is simply the better one.
Full Grain Nappa
Smooth and glove-like, the most polished of the three. The Caramel collar is made in it, a warm, rich brown that ages beautifully with daily wear.
Bovine Grained Leather
Soft, with a light grain that gives the surface quiet character. The Caffe Latte collar is the classic example, a warm neutral that moves through every season. It is not full grain, and we do not call it that.
Natural Grain
Soft and natural, with the grain allowed to speak for itself. The Nero collar is made in it, a deep black and the most timeless of choices, as are Marrone, Fiamma and White Wedding.
One more leather deserves a line of its own. Sage, a soft and supple smooth leather in a calm, natural green, is chrome-free Italian leather.
Inside the Tuscan Atelier
The patterns are drawn by hand and refined with CAD/CAM. Everything after that belongs to Tuscan artisans, in the order of classic Italian leatherwork. The construction is completed entirely by hand.
It begins at the cutting table. The hide is read first, for its grain and for the marks a living animal leaves. Then the strap is cut along a template, from the part of the hide best suited to a collar. After that the leather is skived: thinned by hand where it folds around the hardware, so the collar lies flat and does not bulk at the neck.
Then the edges, where a collar is either finished or merely made. Each edge is first bevelled to take off the sharp corner. Then it is rounded, for comfort where leather meets neck. Edge paint goes on in thin layers. Between each layer the edge is sanded and polished again, until it feels closed and smooth under a fingertip. It is slow, quiet work.
Only then does the collar come together. It is stitched, the seam running straight and even along its length. The holes are punched by hand at measured intervals, the multi-layer gold-coloured hardware is mounted and the leather hangtag attached. If you chose an initial, it is hand-engraved in gold foil on the hangtag. Last comes the final inspection: a hand along every edge and seam, an eye on every piece of hardware, before the collar leaves the atelier.
That is where the one and a half to two and a half hours go. Not into ornament, which a good collar barely has, but into the parts nobody photographs. Time spent there is time the collar gives back later.
A luxury dog collar is not defined by what it shows. It is defined by the hours it took.
Gold, in Layers
The hardware on a Perro Collection collar is multi-layer gold-plated: it goes through several gold baths rather than one. Gold plating is, in the plainest terms, a thin layer of gold deposited onto another metal. On our collars that layer is built up several times over, and the hardware is engineered to resist erosion and tarnishing over time.
It is a small piece of metal. It is also the part of the collar your hand finds every time you clip on the leash. That is why the gold goes on bath after bath, built to keep its lustre through daily handling. The gold on the hangtag is another story, told next: not plating but gold foil.
One Initial, in Gold Foil
Then the smallest detail, and the most personal. The leather hangtag can carry one initial of your dog's name, hand-engraved in gold foil, at no extra cost. We offer it on collars, the Step-In Harness and the H-Harness. One letter, not a name: enough to make the collar unmistakably theirs, quiet enough to stay elegant.
A personalised collar is made for one dog, so it is not refunded. It can be exchanged for another size of the same collar in the same colour, which is one more reason to measure first.
Made to Be Worn
A collar that does not fit stays in a drawer, however fine the leather. Our size guide is precise about it: wrap a soft tape where the collar naturally sits, snug, with no extra slack. Once the collar is on, the two-finger rule tells you whether it sits right.
"Over the years I have bought so many dogs collars from various shops but these are by far my favourite. [...] I ordered three of the white collars for my very little girls and they’re even better than I could have imagined. The leather is buttery soft and having a smaller width available makes them comfortable for my girls to wear all day."

And if you would like to judge any collar, ours included, on its leather, hardware and finish, our guide on how to recognise quality in a luxury leather dog collar goes through it point by point.

Take away the colour and the initial, and a luxury dog collar is an inventory of time: the hide, the hands, the gold, the fit. None of it shouts. All of it shows, slowly, with every walk.
A luxury dog collar is made of time, and the time is what your dog wears.
