Even a precise-sounding word like nappa is, in the leather trade, a generic term with no standardised test to identify it, as the reference entry on nappa leather points out. The label is a starting point, never the proof. The proof is in what a maker is willing to name.
This is not a ranking of brands. It is a way of looking, and it takes about a minute with the collar in your hand.
What the Label Is Really Telling You
Leather is described by layer and by finish. The layer tells you how much of the original surface of the hide survived. The finish tells you what was done to it afterwards. The standard grades, as summarised in the reference entry on leather, read like this.

Read the table from the top and stop at the first honest answer. Full grain is the one grade with nothing taken away, so a maker who uses it has every reason to say so. A description that says only “premium leather” has chosen not to tell you.
Two Leathers, Two Temperaments

The one you feel. Bovine grained leather is soft, with a light grain and a subtle pebble structure under the fingertips. It reads more relaxed, for an owner who likes a little texture in a well-made thing.

Plated, Not Painted
The word gold on a buckle can mean three very different things. Solid gold. Gold plating, which the reference entry on gold plating describes as a thin layer of gold deposited onto the surface of another metal. And gold-coloured, which describes a colour and nothing more.
On a product page the three can look identical. So ask.
Perro Collection hardware is multi-layer gold-plated. Buckles, rings and fittings go through several gold baths, which makes the finish resistant to tarnish. It is plated, not solid gold, and it is never simply gold-coloured. Each piece is assembled onto the collar by hand.
Where the Hours Go
Time is the one cost a maker cannot fake, and the one most rarely published. A Perro Collection collar takes one and a half to two and a half hours of handwork. That time goes into cutting the leather, finishing the edges, assembly, stitching and a final quality check.
You can read most of that work with your fingertips. Run a finger along the edge: a finished edge feels smooth and closed, and it is the part that touches your dog’s neck all day. Look at the stitching where the leather folds around the buckle. Then turn the collar over and look at the inside. The inside is where a maker decides whether anyone will notice.
